Breast Reduction Operation

Breast reduction surgery is often sought by women who feel that their breast size is out of proportion to the rest of their body. This can lead to symptoms such as neck, shoulder and/or back pain or skin problems, which can often be helped by surgery.

Breast reduction techniques involve lifting the nipple to a higher position on the chest wall, removing excess tissue and skin, then reshaping the breast in a higher position. This leaves a smaller, uplifted breast shape.

This procedure has one of the highest ratings of patient satisfaction of any cosmetic procedure. A person’s breast size is determined by your genes, hormones, body frame and weight. Breasts can grow during adolescence, following the menopause, because of the use of HRT or because of being overweight.

A female breast reduction procedure is often referred to as a reduction mammoplasty whereas a male breast reduction is often referred to as a gynaecomastia.

During the procedure fat, glandular tissue and skin are all removed from the breasts and chest area. The breasts are then reshaped and nipples repositioned.

Breast reduction surgery commonly takes several hours and is carried out under a general anaesthetic. You will be in overnight for at least one night. There are several techniques which may be used, dependent on your surgeon, the size of your breast and the desired result. It is recommended to rest for two to six weeks, depending on your individual case.
